Dog Nutrition: My Dog Won’t Eat Fruit or Vegetables!

Do you have a dog who refuses to eat fresh food, especially veggies and fruits? Just like with kids, many times it works to hide the veggies in other foods, so with picky dogs, I recommend hiding them in bone broth. You can use any type of bone broth your dog likes as a base, and then experiment with any type of fresh veggies and/or fruits. However, you cannot feed your dog grapes, raisins, or any kind of onions. Which is why you have to use doggie bone broth instead of human bone broth.

Here is a really easy recipe to start experimenting with ingredients:

Doggie Vegetable Puree

  • 1 1/2 cup turkey bone broth

  • 1 stalk broccoli

  • 1 honey crisp apple (cut up and remove the seeds and stem)

  • 1 TB fresh herbs like cilantro or basil (optional)

  • 2 freeze dried minnows or sardines

  • 2 freeze dried mussels or mussel powder

  • 1 TB freeze dried tripe

Preparation

  • Steam the broccoli.

  • In a blender, add the broccoli, apple slices, cilantro, and omega 3s. Blend well.

  • Pour into glass mason jars or other storage containers. Let cool before feeding. Although, if you need to warm it up slightly before you feed it, that will help boost the aroma and make it more likely your dog will eat it. It should not be hot to the touch when you feed it.

  • Pour 2-3 Tbls on top of your dog’s kibble, or mix it in. You can also use it on a lick mat or in a Toppl or Kong with treats and freeze for enrichment.
